The Inside Scoop

THE VERDICT

The Ioniq 5 is a spacious, fast, and characterful EV that holds up remarkably well over tens of thousands of miles — Car and Driver ran one to 40,000 miles for just $82 in service costs. The interior storage, V2L utility mode, and 800V fast charging architecture make it a legitimately practical family car. However, a cluster of reliability concerns — the ICCU failure affecting an estimated 2-10% of vehicles, a recurring 12V battery issue, and a controversial airbag wiring harness problem that some owners are being denied warranty coverage on — keep it from being a slam dunk.

Maintenance costs are laughably low

Car and Driver spent just $82 on service over 40,000 miles — one tire rotation and a cabin air filter — making running costs genuinely negligible compared to any ICE competitor.

speed
Performance holds up over time

The 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds on the AWD model was identical at the end of the 40,000-mile test as it was on day one, showing no meaningful drivetrain degradation.

Interior storage is genuinely class-leading

A flat floor, multiple cubbies, under-arm storage, wireless chargers, and a fully flat-folding rear seat give the Ioniq 5 more usable interior flexibility than almost any vehicle in its segment.

Before You Buy — What Nobody Tells You

We analyzed the expert reviews and owner discussions to surface the surprises buyers only learn after.

  • heart_broken

ICCU failure is a real lottery

The Integrated Charging Control Unit can fail without warning, bricking the car's ability to charge, and Consumer Reports estimates the defect hits 2-10% of vehicles — odds you only fully appreciate after you've signed the papers.

lightbulb Keep an eye on NHTSA complaint filings for your VIN and join r/Ioniq5 to catch any emerging TSBs or recall news early.

  • construction

Airbag wiring harness runs under the seat unprotected

A critical SRS airbag wire harness runs directly beneath the moving front seats with virtually no shielding, and at least one owner faced a $7,000 repair bill that Hyundai initially refused to cover under warranty.

    — from r/Ioniq5 thread (807 upvotes, 268 comments)

lightbulb If denied warranty coverage, file an NHTSA complaint immediately and escalate directly to Hyundai corporate via email — multiple owners report getting repairs covered after doing so.

  • emergency_share

DC fast-charge port is a fingernail killer

The flap covering the DC fast-charge port requires prying it open with your fingernails, and in cold weather it becomes nearly impossible to operate without fumbling — something no test drive in a parking lot will reveal.

    — from Car and Driver 40,000-mile long-term test

lightbulb Carry a thin coin or spudger in your pocket for cold-weather charging sessions.

Skip If

Buyers who regularly drive 200-plus miles in cold weather on a single charge, or anyone who wants to skip all dealership drama — the ICCU and wiring harness issues mean you should be prepared to advocate hard for warranty coverage.

Such a cool car I couldn't help myself but do a little review of it! The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is full of quirks and features. It incorporates a pixelated design theme inside and out with a hidden message in morse code. The camera system is fantastic, The center console moves. The drivers seat has a built in foot rest. It is tesla charger compatible out of the box. It is fully electric of course and some versions even have a drift mode! We gave this one a satin black liquid wrap with a little bit of purple pearl in it for a more aggressive look. Now it is protected for any adventures that await! #ioniq5 #hyundai #liquidwrap

The 2025 refreshed Ioniq 5 is packed with interesting features! Any that I missed? The 2025 refresh includes more buttons, a NACS plug for easy use of Tesla’s Supercharging network, and a larger battery with more range. Although the 20 inch wheels on this Likited trim lower range to 269 miles. As my first Hyundai vehicle, I was pretty impressed! It’s packed with tech, performance, and fun features in a cool-looking package. #hyundai #ioniq5 #ev #cars #carsoftiktokcontest
